My students love to do science labs. Hands-on learning is more engaging for them. They learn more and they retain more. To do labs though, we need basic equipment. We need beakers, graduated cylinders, funnels, test tube racks and other lab and reference materials.
Our school community is a rural public high school in Hawaii.
Many of my students have mild and moderate disabilities. We are in a high poverty area with many of students qualifying for free lunch. Many live with single parents, relatives or foster parents. Despite these challenges, my students are bright, and many aspire to go to college.
My Project
These lab items are durable and can be utilized this year and in the future. Having equipment would expand the kinds of labs we can do in class. We need beakers and graduated cylinders to measure and hold liquids we work with during labs. I have some test tubes, but no test tube racks. We also need funnels to safely pour and measure liquids. Some of the first experiments I hope to do with my students will involve our study of matter like the kit I've selected for this project.
My students could participate in many interesting labs if we had some simple equipment.
One lab I already have planned would allow us to analyze the effect of temperature on the speed of a chemical reaction. This would require beakers and measuring tools. Please consider helping us obtain these basic items for our lab.
