This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are curious, energetic, and eager to learn. They come to school every day full of excitement and ready to take on new challenges in math. However, many are still developing confidence with foundational skills such as number sequencing, counting, and understanding how numbers work together. To help my students become stronger mathematicians, I am requesting a class set of rekenreks.

Rekenreks provide students with a concrete, visual way to understand numbers up to 20.

By moving the beads, students can see how numbers are composed and decomposed, which helps them build fluency with addition and subtraction. Rekenreks also support the development of mental math strategies, leading to stronger problem-solving skills. With rekenreks, my students will:

1. Build fluency with addition and subtraction facts.

2. Strengthen their ability to compose and decompose numbers.

3. Develop flexible strategies for mental math.

4. Grow in confidence as problem-solvers.

By using rekenreks daily, my students will build the foundational skills that set them up for success in all areas of math. This tool will not only make math more engaging but will also empower them to see themselves as capable mathematicians.
