This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am an academic interventionist in a self-contained classroom, at a Title I school. My roster is built from a list of emerging students and their academic needs. My students often struggle with self-esteem, and they are ready to start feeling pride and confidence in their abilities. This class gives them that safe place to explore many strategies to further close their academic gaps.

In this environment, the toughest students soften as we work together and build a community of support.

They are understanding of this opportunity to grow and put forth their best efforts. There is a mix of 7th and 8th graders, but they work together nicely in small, skill-based groups.

My Project

Students who are able to find a safe place to spend their lunch time with others is valuable for their overall mental health. The opportunity to produce a craft in a social and emotional supported environment supports their outlook towards their own skills and abilities while belonging to the school environment.

The students that come to my club are struggling socially and need an outlet.

The beading activity gives them time to relax and be themselves. I have noticed a change in their demeanor at school since beginning the club. They are happy to come to school on the days they know they get to be together and make jewelry.
