Help me give my students a love for literacy through The Wild Robot and a whiteboard activity table.
Students show a lot of determination to find a way to solve problems. The problems could be in math, reading, lunch, art, or life. As an educator, I strive to give my students the skills and materials needed to solve the problems they encounter. I have a very dynamic group of students. They have a love for learning and a willingness to attempt new pursuits.
Through DonorsChoose.org, with the help of all the amazing donors, students are able to have experiences where they learn new skills or master old ones.
When students are done with a specified task, they want to find new ways to express their learning. As a project is funded it shows students that people are invested in their success. Using the materials requested allows students to find another way to show their learning/mastery with items that might not have been available otherwise.
During the 2017-2018 school year I decided to join The Global Read Aloud. My choice was to read The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. To say that it was a perfect choice for my class is an understatement. From the start to the end of the book we were led through adventure and a multitude of emotions from Roz and ourselves. I want to give my new class the same love for the book as my class last year had by getting each one a copy of the book.
Despite the main character being a robot, students can relate to her need for acceptance and learning to adapt to various situations.
One of my greatest goals as an educator is to show students the power opening a book can give them. A book can show them new worlds, the possibilities around them, and give them a sense of belonging. One of the most precious things to see as an educator is when a former reluctant reader finds enjoyment in books. I truly believe Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot does that for children.
In addition, I would like my students to have the opportunity to write down their thoughts on a whiteboard table. The table would have a positive impact on students across all academic areas.
