My Students
Many kids and grown-ups today don't think that they need to know how to spell. I disagree. For many reasons, learning to spell is as important as it ever was.
My students are a multiracial and multiethnic group.
They also differ in socioeconomic status and in their academic abilities. They attend a small, progressive public school in urban New York State.
A spelling education is still vital to the success of elementary students. These kids can't use spell check if their spelling is so bad as to place them miles away from correctly spelling each word. In addition, learning to spell helps students when it comes to decoding words as they read. It also helps them to express themselves clearly in writing. Spelling study is essential to 3rd graders in particular, as they have been encouraged, rightly, to use "invented spelling" up through 2nd grade.
My Project
Many of my students cannot get help with their homework at home. These children have parents who work all hours to provide for their families, parents who don't speak English, or parents who don't have enough education to help their children to succeed. It is also common for my students to have no home access to the Internet. For these reasons, an aid like the spelling dictionary really comes in handy for many of my students. It is a resource that they cannot otherwise come by.
My students need 30 Scholastic spelling dictionaries.
My students are very excited to be able to keep their spelling dictionaries at the end of the school year.
Owning the dictionary allows each student to utilize it for many years after 3rd grade.
