My Project
Our public charter school is nestled in the heart of a community that is home to one of the largest populations of Native Hawaiians in the entire world. The community has gone through many things, and it battles the same type of epidemics that most lower-income communities battle: guns, drugs, dysfunction, and homelessness. However, they don't let their surroundings dictate who they are. They are resilient, kind, strong, courageous, athletic, creative, and they have hope! Our school offers a range of learning opportunities through mo'olele (stories), mele (songs), hula (dance), mahi'ai (farming), and Papa Ho'okanaka (a class which focuses on learning through 'ike Hawaii), along with their regular content classes.
The sublimation printer, paper, sublimation machine, and craft press are for our Papa Ho'okanaka, which will focus on giving our students the opportunity to share their voices and personal stories through art.
These items will be used to solidify their creativity and their unique ways to showcase who they are. During our Kula Kauwela (summer school), the students were introduced to these tools from another Kumu (teacher), and their faces lit up when they had the chance to make something that was just theirs. Something that showed their personality as well as something that they took time to create and put words, designs, and colors to.
It would mean so much for us to have these items in our classrooms. I hope that as they learn about the tools and express themselves, they will open up and begin to teach others the same. Mahalo in advance for partnering with us!
