My students need copies of Where All Light Tends to Go since they have no textbooks for this course.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Hilton's classroom raised $468

My Students
Remember the novels that haunted you long after you finished them? I do, too. They're also newer titles that my students cannot afford to purchase themselves.
The courses for which this grant will be used include a wide variety of students.
They are extremely bright with aspirations of going on to major universities. While they are academically competitive and strive for the highest grade point averages possible, the classes comprise students whose socioeconomic backgrounds make it difficult to afford ancillary materials for class. Since this is an upper-level senior class, we do not receive priority within the school's limited budget for resources; instead, any (very limited) funding is reserved for courses with tests that factor into our school's accountability model. As a result, the resources in my classroom are ones I purchase or are donated. Also, students who are academically motivated but cannot afford course materials often do not take the course (or any upper-level courses), and they struggle to maintain a competitive edge when applying for college since their class ranking drops due to course selection.
My Project
The class sets of the novels I am requesting are ones that are not only challenging, but also include critical essays, an author interview, and applications of literary theory. Students will not only read the novel; they will read and apply the literary theories and critical essays to their understanding of the novel. The experience of utilizing varying perspectives will help students move beyond reading comprehension into critical analysis, which is a necessary skill for not only their end of year test, but is one that will carry over into their collegiate studies.
This project will improve course accessibility to students who want to challenge themselves but cannot afford to purchase the materials.
Too, the course does not have a textbook, so any resources are greatly appreciated!
Having more resources in my classroom will help me increase enrollment, targeting lower socioeconomic students and minorities. As a result, I will see more students remain academically competitive among their graduating class. Most importantly, I have been in contact with the author who has graciously agreed to "Skype" with my students after reading.
