My Project
Every day, 250 of my students sit in classrooms lit by the harsh glare of fluorescent lights—lights that are not just uncomfortable but deeply painful. For students who suffer from light sensitivity, or prone to migraines, these lighting conditions are abysmal. The bright, flickering nature of fluorescent lights can trigger intense headaches, nausea, and vision disturbances. No child nor person, should be forced to learn while enduring that kind of suffering.
Imagine a student—bright, eager, and ready to learn—slowly growing quieter as the day progresses, their ardor for learning being slowly extinguished.
Students whose temples throb, squinting, they struggle to keep their thoughts together. For, the very lights intended to illuminate their education are suffocating their potential.
Providing classroom shades is not a luxury—it’s an act of compassion and equity. These shades soften the light, reduce glare, and create a calming atmosphere where all students can thrive. For students with sensory difficulties, the difference is life-changing. It means they are not struggling to read off screens with sunglasses, which is the only thing they know may help… It means fewer absences and a safer space where they are not constantly battling pain.
Please be the advocates they need. By funding this project you are providing myself and six co-teachers 52 OSHA complaint shades to cover four classrooms (with no windows) superbright LEDs. You are directly empowering 250 students, of which 53-ish students have daily problems focusing due to the lights, and two coteachers that suffer from migraines. By providing shades, you are sending them a powerful message, that their health, well being and safety is paramount.
