My Students

Melodious Mozart…Mellow Miles Davis… who are these artists?
These are the questions I would like my students to discover. My third grade students are creative, clever, and inquisitive. They live in one of the poorest neighborhoods in the district, where many families live below the poverty line. My students are primarily English Language Learners in which Spanish is the primary language spoken in the home. I would like to provide my students the opportunity to explore the various genres of music, the diverse instruments, and to learn about the lives of the greatest historical composers. Help me enlighten my students to the wonders of music and unleash their imagination.
My Project
Biographies on musical composers, books on the various instrument families, and art supplies are what my students need to begin their exploration of music and music history. My students will use a sketch pad, markers, and colored pencils, to illustrate their interpretation of a musical piece. To further their creative minds, my students will use writing journals to write poetry and stories that reflect the mood and tone of a musical selection. Students will use the biographies to compare and contrast various composers or their musical compositions.
I want to bring music education into my classroom because it leads to better brain development, enhances creativity, provides stress relief, and can be integrated into so many subject areas.
More importantly, it’s just so much fun.
