Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come to school every day very excited to learn something new. They come from a community that values family, education, and hard work.
A lot of my students were very interested to learn that their intelligence is not fixed, but it is in constant state of growth.
The students are learning that making a mistake is all right, provided they do not give up. My students are learning there are multiple ways to solve a problem and that collaboration is often necessary when they are stuck. The students in my class want to be challenged on a daily basis in every area of the curriculum.
My Project
My students are learning how to code on Code.org and Khan Academy. We do have some computers in the class, but not enough for every student to have their own device. My goal is to have every student on a device at the same time, so they can work with each other.
One of our learning goals is getting students to solve problems in real time.
This is accomplished during our coding lessons because they often need to help each other while I am working with students needing scaffolding or enrichment.
The coding class also allows the students to make connections with their own hobbies and experiences. The students love playing games and using applications but do not have a concrete understanding of how the games and applications work. Coding is a great way to introduce students and their families to the world of computer science.
