Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The ability to read well in two languages is a skill that will empower bilingual students for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, our school does not have a great selection of novels in Spanish for the students who are bilingual.

My students are bilingual 7th and 8th graders who attend a public middle school in Maryland.

For most of them, my Spanish for Native Speakers course is the first or second Spanish course they have ever taken, despite speaking Spanish all their lives at home. Because most of their schooling has been in the United States, most of my students have a higher reading level in English than they do in Spanish. Some of them are years behind in Spanish, but they know that it is completely possible to grow multiple years within one school year. It isn't possible, however, without great access to literature in Spanish! The goal of my class is for students to be able to become truly bi-literate and grow their reading proficiency level in Spanish. This will not only help them improve their critical thinking skills, but it will also give them the option of various careers where two languages are needed. Having access to a richer selection of novels in Spanish will help them meet these goals

My Project

The books that I have selected were actually chosen by my students. During the first day of class, I took a poll to see which books would interest my native Spanish-speaking students for independent reading. I hope that by choosing books students want as well as ones that are appropriately challenging for them, they will in turn realize their love for reading in Spanish! Students will read these Spanish classroom library books every day during 15 minutes of independent reading. They will also use them when they finish their work towards the end of class. My goal is to encourage students to read in every spare moment, so they will improve their Spanish reading level. With interesting and engaging books, it is much more likely they will improve their literacy levels.

By supporting this project, you will help my students become independent, bilingual readers and critical thinkers.

This is a skill that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
