As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to help my students receive college credit by scoring a 4 or 5 on the AP United States Government exam.
My students are curious, kind, resilient, and responsible.
They like to work together in teams to use teamwork to understand challenging concepts. Furthermore, my AP Government students are mostly freshman taking a course that is usually taken by seniors. They have shown resiliency by continuing to strive to do better in and outside of class and not giving up when the content has been challenging. My students are always thirsty for knowledge asking pertinent questions about our government and how it affects their lives. Finally, my students exhibit responsibility by attending practice sessions outside of class and consistently completing homework assignments.
My Project
In 2015, only thirteen percent of total AP US Government and Politics test takers were Black or Hispanic students in the state of Tennessee. This is especially concerning because students of color often are not provided the same equal access to AP courses that their more affluent, white peers receive. It is especially disconcerting when we need ALL citizens, regardless of socio-economic backgrounds, to receive a high quality education to become enlightened and civically active citizens.
RHS scholars are changing these numbers.
Our students will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to be an informed citizen that can participate in our government.
This year, twenty-three freshman and two junior scholars will sit for the AP US Government exam. For many, this is the first chance they--or anyone in their family--has had to earn college credit. In order to get them there, our students need high-quality test prep materials.
The Albert.io platform provides rigorous test questions, informative feedback, and lots of practice for continued improvement. The platform also allows kids--and me!--to track progress and mastery. It is especially important as most students in the nation take this class as a senior rather than an underclassman This puts my students at a slight disadvantage because they haven't had as many history classes than your typical senior. It is my hope that the Albert.io platform will give them a leg up in mastering the AP Government exam.
Passing the AP exam is a critical component of our scholars getting into the dream school of their choice and preparing them for their future career. We hope you will support our kids and consider donating if you are able.
