Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first graders are a great bunch! They are blossoming writers, in the magnet school, who are learning to type their reports and are eager to display their work. However, they need a printer and ink to make that happen.
My students are inquisitive 6 year-olds with tons of energy!
They are eager to learn and be part of a 21st century classroom.
Enthusiasm is an always present factor in our class, even though my students live in a low income area. Our school is 100% Title I and all students qualify for free lunch. We are also a California Distinguished Magnet School.
By being a STEM Magnet, we should be offering students access to technology to enhance the learning process. However, because of limited resources, not all classrooms are equipped with the most basic technology, like computers and printers.
My Project
My students are learning to be independent writers. They enjoy writing in their writing journals. But we want to take our writing to the next level. We want to type and print our reports.
These first graders LOVE computer lab time, and their love of writing has skyrocketed because of the use of these computers that we share with over 800 students. We visit the computer lab once a week, where I teach the students basic word processing skills. As a result, my students are learning to type as a way to publish their writing. However, because of our school's limited resources, our classroom does not have a printer to allow my students to print their work.
We need a 21st century classroom.
A printer is such a basic necessity. By having a printer and ink in our classroom, my students will have the opportunity to publish their work and see their stories in a whole new light, inspiring them to continue writing, and be writers.
