Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How can our students learn the scientific method and make scientific discoveries if their only exposure to science comes from a book? My students are full of questions about science, but they do not have the materials to explore the questions in hands-on ways.

My students attend a public school that is made up of approximately 90% Latino students.

The students in my class are second grade learners who are currently going through some major program changes. Our school previously housed both bilingual and English-only classrooms, but now, all students are required to participate in English-only classrooms with special assistance to those who are not yet proficient in English. Despite the language challenges that many of my students face and the economic obstacles with which their families live, they have huge aspirations for their futures. I am reminded each day of their pursuits to become doctors, FBI agents, cosmetologists, and chefs.

My Project

The science materials being requested will go a long way towards helping my students achieve their goals. The kits requested will help my students discover science concepts such as weather, space, rocks, and matter in hands-on ways that let them explore the relationship between what is presented in the book and what they experience in real life. Students will be able to come up with their own scientific questions and determine the answer through completion of their own experiments. These materials will also help them deepen their understanding of the scientific method, a systematic process of exploring a topic or question by conducting experiments and analyzing the results.

The materials requested will deepen my students fascination with all things science!

In addition, the knowledge of the scientific method of inquiry will help my students pursue any career they wish by providing them with 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, innovation, and collaboration.
