Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am fourth grade teacher in a school in the South Bronx. I was born, raised and now I teach there. I would not teach anywhere else. Unfortunately, many teachers would not say this because of the reputation schools in that area have.
However, the main difference I have found between the students in my class and those of students in schools further upstate is that when I ask for things such as a subscription to a magazine, these financially struggling families can not afford it, so their children do not get it. The children still have a hunger to learn, so I'm constantly looking for new and interesting materials for them to absorb.
There is one area especially in which my students over the years have been significantly lacking - world issues. So when I received a sample of National Geographic Explorer, I was excited, because this magazine could help me teach current events along with timely social studies and science news while engaging my students and creating learning excitement.
It will also help me meet my No Child Left Behind goal by providing charts, graphs, time lines, maps or diagrams and high-interest nonfiction articles that will develop their nonfiction reading skills. I will be able to integrate these articles into my curriculum and lesson plans so that I can prepare my students to meet the English Language Arts standards.
Also, I will use the teaching units and background information to create projects from which the students and their families can learn.
Finally, I want my students to be able to think, write and speak critically about world issues. Please help me make this a reality for my 35 fourth-graders by providing each of them with a subscription to National Geographic Explorer.
