This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in a Title I school in Brooklyn, NY, where most students are from lower-income, immigrant, and single-parent or grandparent households. They come from many backgrounds and speak many languages. All my students are language delayed and qualify for special education services.
Teaching kids with disabilities requires a lot of love, patience, and enthusiasm.
Like any other children, they want to succeed, but learning does not come easy for my kids. The living and learning situation is not ideal. The comfort, structure, and predictability of the traditional classroom instruction are gone. My students keep showing up in my virtual classroom with a smile, happy to see their friends, learn together, and just be kids.
My Project
There are two speech providers in our school, servicing about 70+ kids from PreK to 5th grade. We are not provided with specific curriculum for our students, so we make many of our own materials and pick and choose from the ideas we find on Internet.
“In a world of possibilities, today, what will you make?” asks the book “Be A Maker.” Such a limitless question.
We “see” a main character, young imaginative girl, with a drive to build and create one thing after another. This book is a great opening to encourage girls to explore, dream big, create, and collaborate. My students are learning about the world around them. These carefully selected books will provide an opportunity for my students to celebrate women in STEM and spark their interest in these areas. The pictures and videos from If/Then collection will allow my kids to see people of every race and gender engaged in science exploration. We would need to be very creative in our teaching this year to participate in hybrid learning so I will be using an iPad to have easy access to online STEM lessons. The requested accessories will help to protect our technology.
