My Students
“The more that you read, the more things you'll know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” -Dr. Seuss
It's crucial that students who struggle with reading and writing receive explicit, systematic instruction. My goal is for my students to increase their reading abilities by one to two grades.
My students are quiet and shy yet eager to learn and grow.
Our school is a Title 1 school in a rural town on the Windward side of O‘ahu. Our school is located in a predominately rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of children of Hawaiian ancestry as well as other ethnic groups from the Pacific Islands. Our school consists of different socioeconomic and educational backgrounds.
My Project
Basic Reading Inventory Assessments, Bob Book series, Word Their Way activities, and Ortin Gillingham lessons are to help improve reading skills. Laminator, laminating pouches, and luggage tags are to label students' book bags. Letter/legal portable plastic file box is to organize student work and assessments. Half pencils with eraser, Handwriting Without Tears paper, and Triangular pencil grips are to help with fine motor skills to improve writing skills. Art table easel, Hand Art Acrylic paint, Plaid Promoabi Acrylic paint, Super Value Canvas, Mini Stretched Canvas, and Art Alternatives Canvas Panel will be used by students to create personal motivational posters to inspire them. Students who struggle with reading need explicit systematic instruction in order to attain grade level skills. The materials listed above will help support that growth. Through one-on-one tutoring, classroom activities, and support, my students will improve and grow in the area of reading and writing!
The Ortin Gillingham lessons, Word Their Way activities, and leveled readers will provide explicit, systematic instruction in phonics, vocabulary, and spelling.
The writing materials will support handwriting skills. The art supplies will provide a multi-sensory approach in engaging students to create personalized posters which motivate them and their peers. Improvement will be shown in their ability to increase their reading and writing skills thus increasing their self-esteem and confidence.
