Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
There is nothing more rewarding than to have students take ownership of their learning through play. With all the playing that takes place in my class, my students are definitely learning how to be part of a team, make healthy, active lifestyle choices, and find their identity as athletes.
Like all of us, my students LOVE to learn through playing.
Unfortunately, my students' learning opportunities are limited since they are part of a marginalized community and a school district that lacks many resources. My students have much potential and promise. However, unless they are able to demonstrate their full potential and talents, they can be considered our country’s and future’s greatest resource loss.
They constantly seek to learn through playing. For example, many students will look for me in the gym or on the field, to ask for sports equipment before and/or after school, and even during their lunch period. With what little equipment we already have, we share it with another school on our campus and we even invite them to play with our class. With today's job market seeking employees with strong cooperative, team building, and communication skills, the value of learning through team play is increasing.
My Project
My students are constantly seeking ways to avoid boredom, which is often cited as a root cause of many of our community's struggles with teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol abuse, gang violence, and even unemployment. Therefore, the equipment I am asking for will alleviate pieces of these issues. The equipment I am asking for will allow students to participate in smaller group games. Smaller groups are often preferred by students, as it allows for greater participation and students cannot avoid participation as they sometimes do in large group games. Also, smaller grouping are more intimate and students can practice their social skills, which are life long benefitting skills as well.
It is also without doubt, that learning to stay active in the outdoors will lead to the life long benefit of physical fitness.
Staying active is one the best ways to combat the diabetes epidemic hitting my students' community. Much of the diabetes epidemic is a result of my students' sedentary inactivity due to their over use of "screen time," which these outdoor games will reduce.
Finally, these access to these games will also bring them closer to the community. I know the activities will prepare them to be able to play when these games come up outside of school with their friends and families at reunions, barbecues, picnics, beaches, parks, and other outdoor recreational spaces and gatherings.
