This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is the key to success. Through literature discussions, I strive to encourage my students to critically think and read to become better readers, writers, and communicators. We read eight books, write five essays, and learn at least 600 new words.

My students are reluctant readers.

Some of my students do not complete reading homework, therefore are not fully prepared for class discussions. They spend time fishing for plot instead of relating to and analyzing text. A high interest book like Please Ignore Vera Dietz for book club will motivate students to read independently and foster feelings of empowerment through self-reflection and discussions of self-reliance and self-awareness.

My Project

My students need Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A. S. King, a gut-wrenching tale about family, friendship, destiny, the meaning of words, and self-discovery, to engage in our classroom book club. It is a student-centered and run activity that fosters a love of reading. Students will be placed in groups of five based on their reading interest, then delegate an assignment for each group member each week. Students teaching students.

By supporting my project you will be providing reluctant readers with a book that will spark their interest and foster a love of reading.

I have seen the life-changing effect a good book can have on a reluctant reader and it is priceless! You will be a hero.
