Battling the Anxious Generation: Providing a Charging Station for Students

Help me give my students access to their phones during class, BUT without the distraction.

My Project

It's no secret that we teachers are battling and have been battling students on their phones for the last decade, exasperated by COVID. While phones can be great tools in the classroom, they are much more of a distraction.

One Friday, I was thrilled to find a copy of The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt in my box.

This was a book that had been on my "Want to Read" list for months, and with a Master's degree in Educational Psychology and Research, this was absolutely my cup of tea. Haidt reinforced many of the ideas and concerns I've had as a teacher with students and their addictions to their phones.

After reading, I talked to my students about it as we were prepping to read Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451--quite an eerie novel at this point in time. I asked them all to get their phones out and show me how many notifications they had received in the hour they had sat in my class. All students had to scroll to view all notifications. Very few students had their phones on Do Not Disturb. Many felt a buzz in their pocket at each of these notifications. I asked if they thought about what notifications they were missing while I taught... and many admitted that, yes, this was an issue they had with paying attention in class.

Schools across the country have started implementing phone-free schools, requiring students to turn their phones in upon arrival and keep them locked away throughout the day. However, I know this could be worrisome to parents, so providing a way for students' phones to remain within reach in case of emergency AND providing a means of charging students' phones (big win!) will encourage students to put phones away during my class.
