My Project

Our school has an activity called Battle of the Books. This is an extra curricular activity; however, nearly all of my students participate in it each year. I build it up and we discuss it as a class often. The students feed off of each other and the hype; therefore, they get excited about reading. Third and fourth grade students team up to read a long list of books, and then they are quizzed on the books in one final battle. The kids spend weeks preparing and reading to partake in this event. They LOVE it!

This creates a contagious reading culture in my classroom!

To encourage the kids to read the books, I like to keep copies of the books in a special area of my classroom where students can check them out, and put their name on waiting lists to get the book. Seeing the books in the classroom, and getting their chance to read the book gets kids even more eager to read. Since I have been building the hype about participating in the past few years, I have watched my students passion for reading blossom, same with their skills.

The list of books change each year, and I am not able to purchase the books on my own. Having these books would be a well cherished gift!
