Help provide 4th and 5th graders with books so they can participate in "Battle of the Books." Each year students read from a list of books in preparation for a Battle or quiz bowl against other schools in our district. Students can choose to participate, based on their interest. By funding this proposal, I will be able to provide books to more students at a time. Battle of the Books encourages reading and exposes students to quality literature. Students find the competition fun and exciting and have the opportunity to improve their reading skills, grow as a reader, and acquire a broader knowledge base.
I am a school librarian, and am preparing my first team to go to competition shortly. Our school is a community school of Pre-K through 5th graders. Our district hosts a Battle of the Books competition, annually, composed of schools which want to participate.
In order to accommodate as many interested students as possible, we would like to have one hardcover copy and five paperback copies of each title on the list. We will start out with as many interested students as possible at the beginning of the year, and will go to the competition at the end of the year with twelve dedicated students.
I am currently working on introducing the competition to fourth graders, in hopes of getting them involved over the summer. I already have several that are excited about participating and checking out the books we currently have. This is an opportunity to get kids excited about reading!
