My students need tablets to help them read books online and also to reinforce reading skills digitally. Digital games keep them motivated and excited to learn. When this happens, they reach their goals faster!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I LOVE MY KIDS! In my class we read books, take A/R quizzes, work on phonemic awareness and letter recognition, practice sight words, and play games. All of this is to help my kids read better. Many of my kids come to me significantly below grade level. However, through my class they work in small groups to achieve their weekly goals. Whether that is working on the letter 'J' by practicing in the sand or moving up a reading level, my kids ALWAYS achieve their goals. Because of that, we helped move our school from an 'F' to a 'C'
The kids joke that Ms Davis is crazy!
They make me laugh, cry, and go bonkers. We make songs, raps, and fun games out of everything. We put on our thinking caps everyday. The kids even tie them under their chin so it doesn't fall off while they're dancing... We use our bodies to demonstrate things like letters or numbers. We compete in Kahoot against each other for prizes and food. KIDS NEVER leave my room without getting some kind of prize. But after all that, my kids are reading or thinking significantly better than when they came.
My Project
I know that technology in my small classroom can help motivate my kids beyond the same games and written activities we've been doing. Though, my kids have excelled in our current state, I believe that introducing tablets can really take us to the next level. With the tablets we can play games like Kahoot, or practice reading with Education Galaxy, Accelerated Reader, Study Island, ABCya, Starfall, and a host of other programs aimed at increasing reading and math skills.
Without these tablets, some of my kids may never reach higher!
I've noticed that in other classrooms, where kids have access to tablets or Chromebooks, they work harder and enjoy the class because their is a technological component that they enjoy. Therefore, I'm hoping to also include it in my lessons and make reading fun for all of my amazing kids!
