My Students
Readers are leaders. This simple statement sums up the desire of students who participate in our school and our school district's Battle of the Books program. Our participants lead by setting an example of reading excellence in our elementary school.
Students at our high poverty inner-city school come to us with so much potential.
Unfortunately, the challenges of living in poverty and for some, learning a second language, can be difficult to overcome. With that in mind, our teachers are committed to offering as many avenues as possible for student success. One of these is participation in our Battle of the Books reading program. Fourth and fifth graders are encouraged to take part by reading 10 chapter books selected from our state's children's book of the year nominee titles. These books are read in addition to the other homework and classwork assignments. Throughout the year teachers volunteer their time to meet with participants to discuss the books and to prepare for our spring district competition. After reading all year, the program culminates in a exciting, nail-biting, heart-pounding night of quiz bowl competition as we go head-to-head against other teams in the Battle of the Books championship.
My Project
The books that have been requested are ones that students will read for the Battle of the Books program this school year. Students are already looking forward to getting started. Several have asked, "Can I be in the Battle of the Books?" and "When does Battle of the Books start?" Those questions show a desire to read and are certainly music to our ears! We would truly be gratefully welcoming of the resources of books to allow our students to take advantage of this opportunity.
Battle of the Books is such a positive activity on several fronts.
Teachers have seen a direct correlation between participation in the program and an increase in test scores. Battle of the Books is also an excellent way to expose our students to new books and authors while fostering a love of reading. Also, students are able showcase their talent along with providing them a self-esteem boost. The program here at our school continues to grow, and we look forward to another great year of reading!
