Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Look at a stone cutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred-and-first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it, but all that had gone before. J.Riis Students remember great books forever...
Our students are socio-economically disadvantaged.
Although their families have are financial unstable. Most are well-cared for, and loved. Most children are 1st generation in the United States. For the most part, English is not their primary language at home, therefore, they are not exposed to English until they go to school. Due to this, instilling a love for reading, is an ongoing process and often a struggle.
My Project
We are requesting class sets of America's Battle of the Books, such as "Bud, Not Buddy", "Elephant Run", and "December Stillness". Our school is involved with America's Battle of the Books. We compete with other middle schools, reading books and completing book activities. In the spring, we will formally compete in an 'academic' challenge. Each middle school involved will send a team (s) of students who have read and studied the list of books.
Most of our students live in socio-economically disadvantaged neighborhoods.
Devoid of art, culture and visual beauty (with the exception of the local library) these neighborhoods offer nothing for our students to assist in developing their minds and bodies, (even the local pars are filled with homeless). Books offer to fill-in those voids and hopefully, open their eyes to a world outside of their present conditions.
