Ms. Smith from Shreveport LA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students free books! These books are high-interest middle grades titles that feature characters and issues that appeal to our tween readers. The wide range of variety in the LYRC book list has captivated readers.

Our students are readers and leaders! These students have enjoyed reading the books nominated for the 2023 LA Young Readers' Choice Award. They have enjoyed the wide variety of books on the LYRC list which includes graphic novels, fantasy, sci-fi, realistic fiction and nonfiction selections. Many of these students have been reading and voting on their selections for the annual LYRC awards all through elementary school, but some are just learning how much fun reading can be! These students are motivated to read and many have strong identities as readers.
The goal of The Battle of the Books is to promote literacy, engagement, and a culture of reading in our schools.
Librarians collaborated with fellow educators to recruit team members at their schools and prepare all year for the final Battle. Some students meet monthly with teams to check in on their progress. They share ideas, talk about storylines and characters, and test each others’ knowledge. We hope to host an in-person battle for students to compete in school-based teams and determine which school has the most reading power!
Our students have been preparing all year for the Battle of the Books, an event that encourages students to read and compete against other students and schools to demonstrate their strengths in reading! Through discussions and activities with their classmates, students developed stronger understandings of character development and storylines.
To continue to grow the Battle of the Books and promote literacy with middle school students, we plan to award each participant in the Battle of the Books with a free copy of one of the LYRC 2024 middle grades books so that they have a head start on next year’s battle plan! Offering free book giveaways will promote literacy by paying reading with reading!
