My Students
I teach 100 seventh graders. They are "too cool for school" and usually have to be coerced into learning. Once their interest is piqued, they never cease to amaze me with their ability to learn. They have the ability to become content experts and have even taught me a thing or two.
My students want their education to be relevant and mirror real-life experiences.
I want to give them the opportunity to shine. Together, we are a most excellent team.
My Project
Citizen science is an important part of field research in which 7th graders can actually participate. I want to use the Echo Meter Touch 2 device to plug into our new iPods to help my students learn all they can about the endangered bats in our area. Students will sign up to check out our new Echo Meter Touch 2 device for the weekend and spend time listening to wildlife.
The meter does the rest: records the sound and even potentially identifies the type of bat that made the sound.
Using the data we collect, we can map local bat populations and even add to the body of knowledge about our local endangered bats (the gray bat, the Indiana bat, and the Virginia Big-Eared Bat).
After we learn all about them ourselves, we want to provide an outreach program to our local elementary schools during Bat Week (October 24 - 31) to spread the word about the importance of bats in our rural community.
