I am the gym teacher at PS701X @ P723M. My students are all severely emotionally disturbed students. We share the school with students that suffer from autism, and other mental disabilities. My school is what you would call a Quonset Hut. It is built of aluminum. The Building Manager disapproved of our requisition to install a basketball backboard and rim. He reasoned that the aluminum would not anchor the backboard, like wood. We finally convinced him otherwise. I bought a backboard and rim by myself, and his employees put it up. Unfortunately, his fear of the rim doing damage to the building and coming down, made him install it approx 10' 8" high. Regulation is 10' high. The kids want the real thing, and so do I!! My wish is that we could get a donation of a permanent basketball pole, rim, and backboard. This type of basketball setup would go into the ground, not the building. If we could find the generosity, it would be great to have two of them. Obviously, I would be ecstatic with one!! It is a joy watching these kids play. It is especially rewarding outside, since we do not have a gym inside. The gym inside consists of a regular classroom. There would be approximately 150 students enjoying this contribution!
