This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students didn't have a PE teacher last year so I am trying to re-introduce sports and fitness. By the end of the school year I want my students to have the fundamentals of sports and fitness. I want them to be proud of themselves. My biggest challenge is lack of equipment to complete some units

My school is a PK-5th grade in East Harlem, NY.

This is my first year here but from what I see they are mostly from lower-middle class families. They love all different kinds of sports and games and they are all extremely competitive. They are a great group of children, who love sports. Our school is all about the students and their education, teachers stand by and help one another when needed.

My Project

My students need basketballs. Every class I have they all ask me if they can play basketball. I told them I would love to teach it but the balls we have won't stay inflated long and we need new ones. My younger grades I would work on fundamentals like dribbling, passing and shooting. My older grades I would work off what they think they know and fix any issues. Would teach them games like knock-out, around the world and horse. I want to eventually have each grade have basketball tournaments among themselves

It will allow my students to play a sport they love to play.

During recess they take playground balls and play basketball but it isn't the same. I will be able to use this equipment for years to come and introduce new students to the sport. Being able to play basketball might encourage them to join a team whether in school or outside.
