Middle school students transition through some of the most challenging developmental stages in life. Puberty hits them hard, and often at the most awkward of times.
Do you remember how awkward middle school can be?
The changes in friends, their bodies, and in hygiene needs. The embarrassment of: forgetting your deodorant after gym, needing to brush your teeth after lunch, or forgetting to grab a feminine item that day from home? All of our middle school students have experiences like this.
They are from a rural, high-poverty area, and lack many necessary items to have that "clean and fresh" start to every day. This seems so basic for many people, but when your family is faced with choices of buy the groceries or deodorant, hygiene cannot be the priority. By having hygiene basics available, our students will be empowered, confident, and comfortable.
The goal of this project is to allow our math Students to realize that personal hygiene is quite expensive and not always available to everyone due to cost. The simple compassionate act of creating and giving personal hygiene bags to all middle school students will be a physical way they can show compassion. They will calculate the expenses to create beginning of school hygiene packages for students, create packages and distribute them.
Measuring the success of this project will be done through daily interaction as well as a data collection project. Students will determine which items were most used/needed through surveys. They will analyze and create a report using this data. We hope that you consider donating to this project and help us begin our students day with no embarrassment.
