This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our school in North Lawndale faces many of the same challenges that other west- and south-side CPS schools face: pulling together enough basic resources to function! I work at Pope Elementary, a small (250 students total) elementary school on the westside. Last year ('04-'05) my first- and second-grade students' daily activites were jeopardized on a regular basis because my school had no working copy machine, and since there were not enough workbooks to go around in the classroom already, a couple of students were in major trouble. How could they participate without a workbook? Of course I ran to Kinkos weekly to copy workbook pages and other documents, and eventually bought a small copy machine for home use. The problem is, I spend a fortune (money out of my own pocket) on copy paper and ink cartridges. Our class needs one (1) HP (Hewett Packard)-27 Black ink cartridge every two (2) weeks to supply basic homework packets, letters home, and class activity sheets to all 25 students. We also require 1 ream of paper every two (2) weeks, approximately. That is 20 ink cartridges and 20 reams of paper just to function at a basic level. I believe my first grade students next year deserve to have basic supplies like homework packets and workbook pages. Thanks in advance for reading, and for any help you might be able to provide.
