Basics for Teaching in Science Class

My students need a variety of batteries for electrical experiments, DVDs to save work (1 per student), memory cards for pictures of labs, cleaning supplies, pens and a drafting stool.

My Students

Many people realize how difficult it is for a teacher in the inner city to find basic materials such as batteries for science experiments, cleaning supplies for safety, and memory usage. I love teaching, however my disability has made it hard to get around the room and assess students work.

My students are amazing!

They love investigations in our science inquiry projects, creating using their own thought process, and designing labs that they find on their own. We are in a high poverty district, with inclusion in the classroom, where we teach students that are high level and at the same time students that are extremely low. Differentiation is a difficult process in the classroom, which takes up much more time and energy in planning and instruction. But all my students are willing to learn and want knowledge, realizing now that our economy is failing and jobs are hard to find...many of their family members are unemployed or underemployed, and even on Section 8. Some live in shelters, some don't have the proper diet, and some have poor sleeping habits. It becomes part of my job to try and help them out of these situations, so when they are older my students will be productive and full of knowledge.

My Project

These basic materials will greatly help with many scientific inquiry projects in physics and chemistry. Batteries are expensive and they are not supplied by our science department even though many of the experiments use batteries for connections, lighting, flashlights, etc. The cleaning supplies I've asked for is to keep the classroom safe after using chemicals and washing their hands for safety concerns and not spreading germs to others in the building. The memory cards and DVDs are so I can save all their science lab reports because we do not have printers in school and the paper supply is very scarce, if at all available. I also have the students film their science fair projects to show the whole school. And lastly, I've been handicapped for a long time, and it's been getting difficult to walk around the classroom consistently to assess student work, so the rolling swivel chair will greatly reduce the strain on my body.

All I can say is that I hope you consider donating to these simple and basic materials that are not,but should be, supplied by the education system.

It seems that all this money is spread around too quickly, then the departments go bankrupt and ask over and over for more state and government funding. In this recession, our district has taken a huge hit, and I'm just trying to do my best to get my kids to higher level education so they can be productive adults someday.
