My students are amazing, active little learners waiting to embrace their full potential. They are funny, bright, loving kids who don't always have a reason to smile but do so anyway. 100% of students in our school receive free breakfast, lunch, and also dinner for those who attend the after-school program. Over 50 languages are spoken across the student body, including many students who speak little to no English and are experiencing a new life.
Our city is a vibrant, accepting place where many families are refugees and immigrants.
My students have seen more in their 7 years of life than many people ever have or will. Escaping wars in Africa, hunger in Somalia and ethnic cleansing in Burma are just some of the battles my students have already faced. Despite all of this, they come to school every day with a positive attitude ready to conquer the day. We love learning and we love the classroom family we've created. We love DonorsChoose.org for helping our classroom feel like a home for us!
My Project
Do you remember shopping for school supplies? Stocking up for the new year and going into school with new supplies in tow is something most of my students don’t experience. Many of my students don’t have the proper clothes and food at home so asking parents to supply our classroom is not an option. Purchasing materials for my classroom over the summer for September is something I love to do but by December those supplies are dwindling.
Donating to this project will not just mean donating pencils, but that you are helping to create learning experiences my students can cherish forever.
My students need materials to help make the most of our learning. Presharpened pencils ensure we don’t waste countless minutes sharpening pencils. If a pencil breaks, my students know to quietly get up and get a new one which saves us from disruptions and the noisey pencil sharpener interruptions. Developing good habits as young writers is incredibly important to me. Providing feedback helps students learn and grow so finding ways to increase student engagement during peer reviewing is always a fun challenge. Colorful pens will help draw our attention to feedback and make peer grading fun! The printer ink will allow us to publish our writing as well as make activities that fit our learning interests. Glue sticks and bright carstock will help us make fun projects to increase student engagement which in turn increases student learning.
