My Students

Although our school is located in the center of the Silicon Valley, 56% of our students come from low-income families with 22% English Language learners. Only 44% of the parents have had some college or graduated from college.

The school is well equipped with technology so replacing basic classroom supplies is not a priority.

Some students have parents who work in STEM fields while others have parents working minimum wage jobs. The diversity of Socioeconomic status sometimes creates a divide in those who have access to the best materials and those who do not.

My Project

Science requires all sorts of tools. Some basic school supplies like rulers and scissors are used for just about every activity. Middle school students range in size and some supplies no longer fit. Kid scissors once used in elementary school no longer work for the emerging basketball star or piano virtuoso with larger or longer fingers.

Having quality supplies evens the playing field among students who have resources to buy the best and those who do not.

Transparent rulers allow students to see what they are measuring more accurately. Sharp scissors that fit middle school hands allow students to comfortably increase their fine motor control and do detailed work.
