Help me give my students the tools for success in a hands-on learning environment. Classroom creativity helps students engage with their learning and retain information better than rote memorization alone.
I teach in a suburban school in a district with school choice. While some of my students come from middle-class families, many of them live in impoverished neighborhoods with little access to the tools they need to be successful in the classroom. These students show up each day ready to grow personally and academically despite the challenges they face elsewhere.
Teaching students to collaborate is one of the key components of my classroom.
Students are encouraged to work together to investigate texts and craft various genres of writing. Creativity is encouraged and my students love to demonstrate their understanding in many ways --when they have the supplies to do so.
My Project
Allowing students to bring their education to life through creative projects, especially in an English Language Arts class, has been proven to help them engage with content and retain information better. Hands-on learning, such as working collaboratively to create a graffiti board of textual evidence with student-created visuals, encourages students to think both literally and figuratively.
Opportunities for students to be creative provide opportunities for students to excel!
Having supplies to allow students choice in demonstrating mastery of content gives them ownership of their learning and a venue for taking creative risks. Students who create are reaching the highest level of cognitive processes!
