Basic Supplies to Start Off the Year!

My Students

My kids are awesome! We are a large public urban high school grades 9-12 with about 1500 kids. The student body is awesomely diverse as our high school serves as the ESL center for Pittsburgh Public Schools. My classroom is an inclusion classroom which has a variety of learners including ESL, autistic support, students with learning disabilities, and special education needs--all in one room. I've found their uniqueness makes my art class even more amazing because the myriad of backgrounds, needs, and experiences which they pull their inspiration to make art!

My Project

I am asking for basic supplies to start off our school year right. I get less than $3 a student for supplies which should last the entire school year. For an art studio class that meets every day for 44 minutes, $3 of materials does not last very long. These supplies are used for a variety of projects for my beginning students, and I am always running very low on these items!

If you've ever sewn, you know that when you begin it can be a struggle but having the right materials will ensure that my beginning students gain a sense of success in their sewing projects.

My students will use the felt and stuffing to create a pin cushion, stuffies, and stuffed animal. Through each of these projects, the students will learn the essentials of hand sewing, like the running stitch, ladder stitch, tying a knot, and sewing on buttons. My students are motivated by things they see value in and hands-on activities. Each student will see the value in these basic and versatile skills.
