My students need basic supplies, top loading sheet protectors, pens, post-it notes and other basic supplies.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Marissa's classroom raised $479
This project is fully funded
My Students
My students will come in and tell you my mom and dad don't have the money to buy me crayons, pens, pencils, etc. so how can you send home a laundry list of supplies needed in the beginning of the school year? So instead of asking I dig into my own wallet to buy supplies every year.
My students are an amazing group of 12 students who all have learning disabilities and have over come many hardships, personally and educationally, in their short lives.
However, you would never know it when you meet them. Each and everyone of my students could be described as curious, creative, hardworking, funny, loving, resilient, and determined to overcome whatever obstacles life brings their way. Together we have created a healthy and supportive learning environment. Why should their education be compromised due to lack of money and supplies? Closing the gap means affording all students equal opportunities to learn no matter what their socioeconomic background but unfortunately that is not the case. Working in the heart of Brownsville, Brooklyn, my students face many challenges (poverty, unstable living situations, hunger, etc.) and wondering if they will have the right school supplies to learn should not have to be a burden that he or she takes on in addition to daily stressors.
My Project
The supplies on the list will help us complete daily tasks in all content areas. The post-its will be used for my students to take notes when they are reading to then share during partner reading or to add details to the stories they are writing during writers workshop. The dry erase markers will be used to complete collaborative math games in small groups, sign-in their first and last name when they arrive at school as part of our attendance procedure, or to fill in missing words in our morning message during our community time. The dry erase markers will also be used to help them independently book shop and to work on fine motor tasks to meet their occupational therapy Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals. The file folders will be used to create different task analysis to help them improve on their Executive Function challenges in accordance to their IEP. The binder rings will be used to create individual word rings of sight words. All of the tools are essential for learning.
Students and their families should not have to stress that they don't have the money to provide school supplies at the beginning of the year.
Instead of stressing families out I am asking for your help to make sure that my students have what they need this year to be successful learners in all content areas. Every dollar helps to ensure that we have a wonderful year full of learning and continued success. The students have showed me their dedication to learning and why not eliminate all obstacle?
