Basic Supplies Should Be in Front of Everyone's Eyes

My Students

I teach in a low-income school district, where most of our students come from single-parent homes. The students in my building face the daily struggle of attending school daily without having the supplies and the basic understanding of how to be successful in the classroom. Our students want to learn and be successful but often need help in the areas of academics and social skills.

The students are faced with many challenges outside of the classroom.

They often have to watch their siblings after school because of their parent(s) working late, are responsible for taking care of their homes, and may participate in after-school activities. Many of our students do not have access to healthy and clean food for meals and snacks. The students want to do better but need guidance and support in all areas of their life to be able to learn skills necessary to get out of the cycle of poverty.

My Project

Do you remember what it was like on the first day of school when you had brand new pencils and pens? Many of my students do not know what that is like. The pencils, pens, markers and glue go into pencil holders that sit in the middle of each group and are available for all students to use. The colored pencils will help to bolster the older and shorter ones we already have.

Basic supplies should be available for everyone regardless of their ability to get them on their own.

These supplies will be community supplies that everyone has access to without needing to ask to borrow them. No shame, no guilt, no need to ask for supplies.
