My Students
My students are really special to me for many reasons. I have a wonderful group of students who come from diverse backgrounds that make them unique. Being engaged in their own learning is crucial for ensuring their success. For example, I know that they learn best through active and meaningful experiences which they can connect across the content areas and to their own experiences.
I know my students' learning style and that learning by doing is essential for them because it is so highly motivating.
Unfortunately, most of the enriching experiences my students encounter are within the school walls because my students live in high poverty situations.
My students deserve to learn in the best way possible and that is by making real world connections!
My Project
In order to effectively utilize class time and engage students in learning as they walk through the front door of our classroom, my goal is to provide all basic supplies needed for them such as pencils, pens, highlighters, and an electric pencil sharpener. My students carry their items in their backpacks; they do not have lockers. The time students spend cycling through their backpacks to dig out supplies is critical class time that could be used in order to maximize learning experiences. Providing my students with supplies gives them one less thing to worry about during the school day and encourages them to focus on their learning instead of external factors that they might be going through.
My group of middle school students learn best by working through hands-on learning scenarios with their peers.
This is why it is of the utmost importance that supplies are plentiful and easily-accessible for students, so they can freely create. Many of my students come from low income homes and it is hard for them to bring in supplies needed to set them up for success. If these supplies are provided for them, their time can be spent on learning and not worrying.
When we return to school from the winter holiday, I will not be able to provide the basic supplies needed for my students to complete the hands-on activities that I have planned for the spring semester. Families will not have the funds to come up with the supplies needed either. I desire for my classroom to be a place where my students can feel safe and comfortable; where they come to learn instead of being stressed about lack of basic learning tools.
