This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many of my students have gaps in their mathematical background. I want to help them fill in some of those gaps by creating an interactive notebook filled with information that they can refer to whenever they need it.
My students are typical seventh graders.
Many of them have struggled with math for years. They know they need to sit still and learn, but they would rather have fun. Some of them do not have a lot of academic support at home. They do not have anyone at home impressing upon them the value of getting a good education. It is tough trying to fill in the gaps in their learning while still trying to teach them the material we are responsible for this year.
My Project
My students will use the composition notebooks, pencils, colored paper, long range stapler, glue, and other supplies to create an Interactive Mathematics Notebook. The Interactive Mathematics Notebook will be a survival guide. The students will take notes in it and add examples to it as we cover new material. In addition to taking notes, they will create colored foldables for challenging concepts, like fractions, which they will then glue/tape into their notebook. My students will also staple handouts on things they were supposed to learn in previous years, like how to use the measurement conversion tables, the operations on integers rules, and the order of operations steps, to their notebooks. This way they can just refer to this information in their survival guide when they need a quick reminder. I work closely with the eighth grade teachers, so when the year ends, students will keep their notebooks and continue to add to them and use them next year.
My students generally want to learn.
It's hard to see them do all of the steps for a problem and then get it wrong for choosing the wrong sign, because they simply couldn't remember the rules for multiplying integers. It's also hard to see them skip problems that they probably know how to solve, but they can't remember how many feet are in a mile. Allowing them to put this information in their Interactive Notebook where they can quickly access it when they need it will help them be successful.
