Help me give my students basic supplies to learn how to express their ideas using drawing and color. These markers and crayons are the basic supplies students need to develop their skills at self-expression and creative thinking.
Students at my school come from a very low-income area; in fact, 50% of the students in my school meet the definition of homeless. At the same time, the area is surrounded by the wealth of Silicon Valley a stark contrast to the poverty my students know. They are the children of hardworking everyday heroes, the dishwashers, the cleaning ladies, the gardeners who work multiple jobs to put food on the table.
These families work hard to provide a better life for their children and our school does the best we can to make education their path out of poverty.
To create an engaging learning environment for my students I need to provide them with basic supplies. Art class can support many different kinds of learning. It's a place where all types of learners can shine and feel accomplished. With your help, I can provide these students with art experiences that will help them grow their creative problem-solving skills.
My Project
The materials you provide will give my students the tools they need to develop their drawing skills and to communicate their ideas visually. These skills are especially important at my school where most of the students are second language learners.
Research shows that students who are learning English learn vocabulary better when they can also express their ideas visually.
Drawing makes students better at thinking visually and better at communicating their ideas to others. For second language learners, this is an important skill to help them learn English faster, to make school more interesting by lowering the frustration of being unable to express themselves.
