This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a teacher in a low-income/high-poverty school district, I work with students who are faced with several challenges both in the classroom and at home. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

How can we close the achievement gap when students do not have the necessary materials to succeed?

My students walk into my classroom every day full of life and ready to learn! They want to be in school because they know that education is what it takes to be successful.

We’re running short on basic supplies at the moment. Pencils are needed on an everyday basis to aid in learning. The headphones will be used to keep the noise down in the classroom as students are working on the computer.

In our classroom, we are currently learning about fractions. This is almost an entirely new concept in third grade and my students are struggling. Having manipulatives that represent fractions will give my students a leg up, allowing them to physically touch a fraction and use it to solve problems. With the different fractions, students will be able to visualize the equivalency of fractions with both the same and different numerators and denominators.

COVID-19 has had a large impact on their social-emotional well-being, as well as their academic learning. The glow stick packs will help facilitate an end-of-the-year glow party as a reward for all of their hard work this year and their transition into fourth grade.

These supplies would give us what we need to finish out the year STRONG!
