This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The motto at our school is “Supporting Student Strengths with Passion, Purpose, and Professionalism.” Many of the Special Education students I work with come from limited resources and have behavioral, medical, and academic needs. Some of the students live in group or foster homes, and it can be a challenge to find motivating activities that will engage them.

This project focuses on fostering students’ strengths by making sure they have access to the basic materials needed to create a fun and functional speech room!

My Project

Help us get the basic materials, such as mirrors and decorative borders, in order to create a student-centered speech room.

We are in need of some unique basic speech materials to help students visualize their speech production in a welcoming environment!

The portable therapy center contains everything an itinerant speech therapist would need. There are pockets to hold and display sound cue cards, a mirror for students to practice their speech sounds, a felt boards for cards, and a magnetic whiteboard for additional visual cues. This center would be supported with a mouth model so students can visually see the exact placement for their tongue and a sound mirror, so they can see and hear their speech productions!

Kleenex tissues are a hidden gem because they are practical to help with runny noses, but are also a great way to encourage language development. For example, they can show puffs of air when a certain sound is made and they can also help develop vocabulary by having students describe them. Is a tissue soft? What do you do with a tissue? Who does the tissue belong to? The language development and extension is endless. The palm tree, tropical leaves, and borders will create a space that is ready to display our back-to-school Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Welcome to the Speech Room theme. The students will create colorful birds to place in the tree and their speech project will be surrounded by the colorful borders. Not only are these basic materials useful in speech therapy, but will also help to create a space where students are motived to grow their language and communication skills.
