This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 31 year old teacher of a class of 24 bright, talented and lovable second grade students. I work in a "barrier free" school. That means that my school opens it's doors to all children, regardless if they are physically or mentally challenged. It is beyond wonderful to see children with varying disabilities going to school with their neighborhood friends and peers.

I just transferred to a school that is less than a mile away from my old school that I taught at for 8 years. I was tired of my old school - not of the children, of the adults! I absolutely love the children in the area. There is just something about them that is special. When I packed up my stuff to move to my new school, there was only so much that I could take with me. I also wanted to ensure that the next class that was going to be in my old room had supplies to use. So, I left a lot behind. Upon entering my new classroom, I realized that I literally had no supplies to work with. There was not as much as a pack of pencils in my new classroom. I have done my best to buy as much as I can on my own, but I never seem to have enough for my kids.

I have slowly built up supplies in my classroom to the point that my kids are not desperate for anything, but I certainly would love to give them more. I would love to give them each a pencil box filled with school supplies. Many of my kids came in to school in September with absolutely nothing. I had to purchase everything for them. I would like to give my class what other children in other areas consider everyday necessities. I have requested a pencil box for each student, filled with basic supplies like pencils, crayons, markers, erasers, rulers and glue.

These seem like basic things to most people, but they mean the world to my kids. They deserve everything that other students have. I would love to be able to put a huge smile on all of their little faces!
