Help me give my students clean, warm clothing and hygiene supplies, such as Shower Pill body wipes, Old Spice antiperspirant and deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, dry shampoo, and Gildan sweatpants.
I teach young adults, ages eighteen to twenty-two, with a variety of intellectual, physical and sensory impairments in our high school's Transition Program. My students are focusing their time in school on preparing for life after high school. This looks different for every student. We work with each student individually, to help them communicate and work towards their personal goals and visions for their futures.
Many of my students struggle with keeping themselves and their clothing clean.
Several of them do not have access to laundry facilities on a regular basis and sometimes come to school needing warm clothing or clean clothing.
My students are looking forward to being as independent as possible after high school. All of my students participate in internships and jobs around our school building and in the community as part of their education. Inability to launder their clothes at home adversely impacts their ability to be accepted by employers and co-workers on job sites, as well as peers in school. We have a washer and dryer that students can access at school, but they need hygiene supplies and clean, warm clothing.
My Project
This project will benefit students who come from homes that do not have access to laundry facilities. The laundromat is a struggle for them and their families, both financially, and because of a lack of transportation. Some of these students are overcoming a variety of challenges, including homelessness, poverty, and physical disabilities.
These supplies will allow these students to come to school, change into clean, warm clothes, do their laundry, and freshen up so that they are clean, comfortable, and ready to focus on learning skills to get jobs and improve their situation.
These students face obstacles every day and still come to school ready and eager to learn new skills.
