This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.
My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds and have many different educational needs.
Many of them are being raised in single-parent households, and 99% receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status.
They come from neighborhoods that are filled with obstacles. I may not be able to control their home lives; however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hoping to inspire them to continue on a path of academic excellence. My students deserve the best because they are bright, talented, and creative.
My Project
Daily I have students coming to my room asking me if I have anything to eat because they missed breakfast. I will use the granola bars and snacks for feeding the students when they are hungry. Some students will come after lunch because they did not eat lunch and would like a snack because there belly is growling.
When a student is hungry they can not concentrate on their learning and even a little snack can help them.
I also have many young women and men coming to my room asking for deodorant or feminine products. They feel safe and secure coming to me to get their needs meet.
