Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In twenty years of teaching, I’ve never experienced the extreme influx of newcomer students as I have this year. In one year, our school has enrolled over one hundred new immigrant students in all grades. Our 6th grade class alone has added fifteen new students and continue receiving new students on a monthly basis.
Some of these students have arrived with little to no resources.
I have submitted a project for our students basic hygiene needs (Basic Needs = Path to Success) but they also need food to help them continue to concentrate and be at their best all day.
In addition, many of our students participate in after school activities and clubs, many times not eating enough to keep their minds and bodies at their very best.
Our school is a unique place in that it is a PK-8 school so we serve many families and students in the community. As a public school we take all students regardless of race, ability, socioeconomic level, citizenship, etc and we make sure they are given the best education possible.
