My Students

In my classroom, all students are Star Scholars. They are loved unconditionally. Scholars are provided a safe space to take risks, be vulnerable, and develop a sense of childhood curiosity and wonder.

They are thirsty for knowledge, eager to please, and desperately want to be better at "school." We have worked so very hard to cultivate a strong culture of learning that I can honestly say that their drive for success is inspirational.

They have endless energy and enormous hearts!

My scholars are innocent, kindred spirits who deserve so much more than what our society has given them. For many of my students, their future relies solely on their experiences in our school. Regardless of the unthinkable barriers that my scholars experience outside of our four walls, they know that my belief in them never wavers.

My Project

During this time of remote relationships and distance learning, the inequities of our educational system are now more glaring than ever. The is an unprecedented time with brand new and challenging expectations for teachers, parents and students alike. In Chicago, we were given 1 day's notice to prepare learning packets to send home with our students, the content of which was supposed to span over 5 weeks. With that 5-week window coming to a close, students and teachers are now asked to engage in virtual learning, including live video lessons.

There is only so much teaching and learning that can take place on a live video lesson with 26 students who do not have the basic supplies to participate in a learning activity.

While the school, city, and district officials are attempting to address the challenges that arise from lack of access to technology and wifi, there are several other hurdles that teachers are coming up against.

The Star Scholar family has a daily, live video lesson where we all come together in a Google Meeting. Most of my Scholars are video chatting using their parents' phones, and all of them are living in homes with other people. As you can imagine, we have to be very strategic about using our "mute" buttons. During our lessons, there were frequent moments where video or audio will freeze, lag, or cut out. As such, I have to begin to shift my teaching approach from "Think & Share" to incorporate more "Write, Sketch, & Show" opportunities. This will allow all of my students to engage in our learning lesson and feel confident in their participation.

We can't do this without having basic learning materials in our home, which most of my students do not currently have.
