Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our Title I school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students, and they get to the school early to eat the breakfast that they don’t get at home. My students eat their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day.
We are a uniform school, and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small, and don't really look clean.
The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn, but some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused, come every day from group homes, homeless, or being raised by grandparents.
My students are 11, 12, 13, and 14-year-old boys and girls, growing, trying, creating, experiencing, experimenting, challenging, and ultimately becoming educated with art in my classroom.
My classes are all year long so I can work with these students in-depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, likes/dislikes and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases and grows.
My Project
I have been getting complaints from students that the pencil sharpeners at their table don't work or they don't like them. I tell them to let me know if any supplies at their table are missing or don't work. We use color pencils and pencils every day in the art room when students do their warm up sketch and student's don't bring their own sharpeners. There is a tray at each table with the art supplies students need to complete assignments. In this tray there are pencil sharpeners that were new at the beginning of the year but now 4 months later of use every day they are dull.
This is a title one school and it wouldn't be fair if they didn't have the required materials to complete assignments or the materials barely worked; as I want these students to have good quality, functioning tools to learn to draw like professional artists.
I bought these with my own money because you can't draw with a dull pencil or color with dull color pencils and a title one school, I don't ask parents or students to bring their own materials when they don't even have enough for food and clothing. Some art materials I go for the best quality and pencil sharpeners are a necessity. The pencil sharpeners are big, have 3 holes and I had hoped would last the whole school year but I just checked them on Friday and they don't sharpen.
