My students are all from underprivileged and at risk areas in Houston. While they may not have the advantage in life, they still strive to learn and have great life goals. About 80% of my students are financially unable to purchase their own art supplies, but I don’t want this to be the reason they can’t make great art. Each one of my students has unique artistic talents that I want to cultivate and prove to them that they really can be artists. Having the appropriate art supplies will help me achieve this goal and will make the students feel special, and that they are indeed worth real art supplies.
Our art program is very under funded and my students are eager to do art that involves more than just basic number two pencils and crayola pencils. I want to give them the chance to use charcoal to learn about value and draw still life works. All the classrooms and materials are shared and neither of my classrooms I use for art have pencil sharpeners! My students haven’t been able to do any art projects yet because they had a long term sub and we are only just starting our journey together. Help me help my students feel like they are real artists.
